How to Draw a Flame (Easy Step by Step)

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Body and side flickers
Draw a big rounded bowl shape that is wide at the bottom. Curve the top of the left side into a small pointy flicker, and the top of the right side into a bigger one, leaving a wide gap in the middle.
Step 3: Left side of the tip
Start low in the gap, near the left flicker, and draw a long, gently curving line up toward the sky. Stop at a sharp point near the top.
Step 4: Right side of the tip
From the sharp point at the top, draw a curved line down the other way. End where it meets the right flicker, so the tall tip is closed.
Step 5: The little inner flame
Near the bottom middle, draw a small teardrop with a point on top and a round bottom. It looks like a water drop sitting inside the big flame.
Step 6: The happy face
Inside the small teardrop, draw two round dots for eyes. Between them and a little lower, add a small curved smile.
Step 7: Sparks in the air
Add two little dots floating above the flame, one on each side of the tall tip. Make them different heights so they look like they are flying up.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a flame
- Draw the outer shape slowly and keep the bottom nice and round, so the flame looks like it is sitting on solid ground.
- The tall tip is the trickiest part. Start the left line low in the gap, curve it gently up, and let both sides meet in one sharp point.
- Make the inner teardrop about half as wide as the big flame, and keep the eyes and smile low in it so the face looks sweet.

How to color your flame drawing
Try red, orange, and yellow in layers, with the biggest area red and the inner teardrop bright yellow. For a creative twist, color the flame blue and purple to make a magic fire.
Flame fun fact for kids
Fire needs three things to keep burning: fuel, oxygen from the air, and enough heat. Take away any one of them and the fire goes out.
