How to Draw a Blimp (Easy Step by Step)

A blimp is a giant floating balloon, and it is built from a few easy shapes: a big oval, some curved lines, a rounded box, and tiny circles. This drawing adds two tail fins and a little propeller, so your blimp looks ready to cruise across the sky. Add a couple of clouds and the whole picture comes together.

How to draw a blimp step by step

How to Draw a Blimp · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big balloon

Draw a large wide oval lying on its side. This is the body of the blimp, so make it the biggest shape on your page.

  3. Step 3: Curved stripes

Inside the oval, draw two long curved lines, one above the middle and one below. Start each a little way in from the left edge and end a little way in from the right edge, like the curves on a beach ball.

  4. Step 4: The top fin

At the left end of the balloon, draw a long skinny fin that leans up and out, like a tall slanted triangle with a rounded top. Let its bottom touch the top of the oval.

  5. Step 5: The bottom fin

Draw the same fin again going down from the left end, like a mirror image of the top fin. Let its slanted side touch the bottom of the oval.

  6. Step 6: The propeller

On the very left tip of the balloon, draw a few small pointy leaf shapes that stick out to the left, stacked one above the other.

  7. Step 7: The gondola

Under the middle of the balloon, draw a box with a flat bottom and rounded bottom corners. Start the two sides at the bottom of the oval and draw them straight down, then join them with the bottom line.

  8. Step 8: Little windows

Inside the box, draw three small circles in a row. Put a smaller circle in the middle of each one.

  9. Step 9: Fluffy clouds

Draw a cloud in the sky at the top right and another at the bottom left. Make each one with a flat bottom and two or three round bumps on top.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a blimp

  • Draw the big oval very lightly first. If it looks lopsided, you can erase it and try again before adding anything else.
  • The two curved stripes should bend the same way as the oval. Stop them a little before the ends so they do not touch the outline.
  • The tail fins are the trickiest part. Draw the top fin first, then copy its shape upside down for the bottom fin so they match.

Blimp fun fact for kids

Blimps float because they are filled with helium, a gas that is lighter than air.

Questions about drawing a blimp

What shapes do I need to draw a blimp?

You need a big oval for the balloon, a rounded box for the gondola, and small circles for the windows. The fins are long skinny slanted triangles, and the propeller is a few little leaf shapes.

How do I make my blimp look like it is floating?

Draw a few clouds around it, one high and one low. Leaving lots of empty space under the gondola also makes it look like it is up in the air.

How do I get both tail fins to look the same?

Draw one fin first, then copy it on the other side as if you were folding the paper in half. Keep both fins about the same length and make them touch the oval in matching places.
