How to Draw a Baby: easy drawing guide for kids

How to Draw a Baby (Easy Step by Step)

A baby is a great first character to draw because it is made almost entirely of ovals and circles. You start with a big round head, add a plump little body and feet, and finish with small details like a pacifier, a rattle, and a heart on the tummy.

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big head

Draw a large wide oval near the top of the page for the head. Make it a little wider than it is tall.

  3. Step 3: Body sides and hand

Under the head, draw two curved lines for the sides of the tummy, leaving a gap between them. On the left side, add a little curly hand with a short stick, and draw a tiny curved mark with a dot below it for a toe.

  4. Step 4: Big feet

At the bottom, draw two wide rounded feet, one on each side of the tummy. Join them with a gently curved line across the bottom of the tummy so the body is closed in.

  5. Step 5: Two arms

Draw a curved arm on each side, starting just under the head. The left arm bends down to meet the little hand, and the right arm ends in a rounded hand.

  6. Step 6: The rattle

Draw a circle at the end of the stick the left hand is holding. That makes a rattle for the baby to shake.

  7. Step 7: Eyes and pacifier

Add two round dots for eyes, spaced wide apart. In the middle of the face, draw a small circle with a dot inside, then a little loop below it, touching the chin, for the pacifier handle.

  8. Step 8: Tuft of hair

On the very top of the head, draw a small half circle for a curl of hair, like a tiny loop sitting on the head.

  9. Step 9: Heart and fold line

Draw a little heart in the middle of the tummy. Then add one short curved line on the right side of the tummy, near the arm, for a fold in the outfit.

  10. Step 10: Toe mark

Finish by adding a short curved line and a small dot on the right foot, to match the toe on the left foot.

  11. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a baby

  • Make the head much bigger than the body. A big head is what makes the baby look young and cute.
  • The pacifier is the trickiest part. Draw the small circle first, then the dot inside, and last the little loop underneath so everything lines up in the middle of the face.
  • The hand and its stick are drawn with the body, and the rattle circle comes later at the end of the stick. Draw the circle right at the tip so the hand looks like it is really holding it.

How to color your baby drawing

Try a soft pink or peach for the skin, pale yellow for the outfit, and a bright color for the rattle. For a creative twist, make the heart a different color from the outfit so it stands out.

Baby fun fact for kids

Babies are born with about 300 bones, but adults have only 206. Many of a baby's small bones slowly grow together as they get older, and the soft spots on a baby's head close up as the skull bones join.
