How to Draw a Lumberjack (Easy Step by Step)
This lumberjack is built from simple shapes you already know: a dome for the hat, ovals for the boots, and a tall rectangle for the axe. A plaid shirt made of straight lines and a short, round stump make him look like he just walked out of the forest. It is a great drawing for practicing curves and straight lines together.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: Hat and head outline
Draw one big rounded shape like a tall egg for the hat and head, with a little dip at the top. Let the sides curve in at the bottom and stop, leaving the bottom open.
Step 3: Hat band and pom-pom
Draw two long, slightly curved lines across the hat, one just above the other, to make a wide stripe. Then add a tiny circle on top of the hat for the pom-pom.
Step 4: Beard line
Draw a curved line across the face from one side to the other, like a gentle smile shape, to show where the beard begins. Then draw a wavy line along the bottom to close in the beard.
Step 5: Face and shirt lines
Draw two small dots for the eyes and a little curve for the smile. Under the head, draw some short straight lines going up and down for the start of the shirt.
Step 6: The shirt
Draw a wide rounded box under the head for the shirt. Start at each side of the beard, draw the sides down, and join them with a flat curved line at the bottom.
Step 7: Arms and hands
Draw a long curved shape down each side of the shirt for the arms. At the end of the left arm, add a small round circle for the hand.
Step 8: Plaid line and boots
Draw one straight line across the middle of the shirt to start the plaid pattern. Then draw two flat ovals at the bottom, side by side, for the boots.
Step 9: The axe
Next to the lumberjack, draw a tall thin rectangle for the handle. At the top, add a curved blade shape, and draw a small band near the bottom of the handle.
Step 10: The tree stump
On the left, draw a short, wide can shape with a curved top and a curved bottom. Add a small oval on top for the ring of the stump.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a lumberjack
- Draw the hat and head as one big egg shape first, then add the band lines so they curve the same way as the dome.
- For the plaid shirt, draw the up and down lines first and the sideways line after. Use a ruler edge or the side of a book if your lines wobble.
- Draw the stump last, and give it a flat bottom curve like a can so it sits on the ground next to the boots.
