How to Draw a Street Lamp (Easy Step by Step)
A street lamp is a great first drawing because it is built from simple shapes: a triangle, straight lines, a rounded tray and one curly swirl. It is tall and a little fancy, so it looks impressive when it is finished. The short rays of light make it look like it is glowing.

Step 1: Roof, glass and rays
Start with a tiny circle at the top. Draw a triangle roof down from it, then draw four straight up-and-down lines under the roof for the glass. Add short lines sticking out on each side for the rays of light.
Step 2: The roof edge
Draw a gently curved line straight across the bottom of the roof, sticking out a little on both sides like the brim of a hat.
Step 3: Lamp bottom tray
Under the glass lines, draw a flat line, then a wide rounded tray hanging below it. Make it a little wider than the glass.
Step 4: The tall pole
Start under the tray and draw two long lines going straight down. Keep them close together and side by side.
Step 5: The curly arm
Start at the side of the pole and draw a long curve that sweeps out and up. Finish with a little curl, like a snail shell.
Step 6: The first step
At the bottom of the pole, draw a shape like an upside-down U with a flat top and two short sides. The pole stands on it.
Step 7: The wide base
Draw a long, wide rounded rectangle at the very bottom. It should stick out past the first step on both sides.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a street lamp
- Draw the straight lines of the glass slowly and try to keep them going up and down. Spacing them evenly makes the lamp look neat.
- Draw the two lines of the pole side by side, close together. Take your time so they stay straight.
- Draw the curly arm in one smooth motion, then finish with the curl. If it wobbles, try again lightly and trace over the best try.

Street lamp fun fact for kids
Before electric lights, many street lamps burned oil or gas. A worker called a lamplighter walked around each evening and lit them one by one.
