Step 1: Hat sides
Draw two gently curved lines that lean toward each other and almost meet at the top, like an upside-down V. Leave a tiny gap at the pointy tip and leave the bottom open.
Step 2: Hat band
Draw two curved lines across the bottom of the hat, one above the other. Start each one at the left side of the hat and end it at the right side to make a band.
Step 3: Beard, nose and candy cane base
Under the hat band, draw a big bumpy cloud shape for the beard, starting at the left end of the band and ending at the right. Add a small rounded nose at the top middle and a short line down the middle of the beard. On the right side, draw the bumpy start of a candy cane's handle and a small piece at the bottom.
Step 4: Little boots
Under the beard, draw two boots side by side with a gap between them. Each boot is a short upright shape with a flat foot sticking out to the side.
Step 5: Curly mustache
Start at each side of the nose and draw a curved line that swoops outward and ends in a little curl. Make both sides match, like a pair of swirls.
Step 6: Candy cane
On the right side of the gnome, draw a long, wavy candy cane stripe that starts with a curved hook at the top and curves down to the bottom. It connects to the little pieces you drew before.
Step 7: Star and dots
On the tip of the hat, draw a small star shape. Then add three little dots spread across the hat.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a Christmas gnome
- Start the hat with two curved lines that almost meet at the top, then add the band across the bottom so the hat looks tall and pointy.
- The fluffy beard is the trickiest part. Make lots of small, round bumps instead of one long line, and lift your pencil between bumps if you need to.
- Draw the two mustache curls one at a time, starting from the nose and curling outward, and check that they are about the same size.

Try a red hat with a white band, a white beard, and brown boots, with a red and white striped candy cane. For a creative twist, color the hat in your favorite non-Christmas color, like purple or teal, and make a whole gnome family.
Christmas gnome fun fact for kids
In Sweden, a Christmas gnome called a tomte (or tomten) is a folk tradition. Many families leave out a bowl of porridge for the tomte on Christmas Eve.
