  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The hat dome

Draw a big upside-down U shape, like a rainbow or a hill, with the sides going nearly straight down. Leave the bottom open for now.

  3. Step 3: The folded cuff

Draw a wide rounded rectangle across the bottom of the dome. Its flat top edge crosses from one side of the dome to the other, and its bottom corners are rounded.

  4. Step 4: The pom-pom

On top of the hat, draw a round ball with a bumpy, wavy edge, like a cloud or a fluffy flower. Let the bottom of the ball sit right on the top of the dome.

  5. Step 5: Wavy zigzag stripes

Draw two wavy zigzag lines across the dome, one above the other. Make each one go up and down like little mountains, from one side of the hat to the other.

  6. Step 6: Cuff ribs

Inside the cuff, draw seven tall, skinny lines going up and down. Space them evenly, like the stripes on a knitted sweater.

  7. Step 7: Fluffy pom-pom marks

Inside the pom-pom, add a small curved smile-shaped line on the left and a short bent line on the right. These make the yarn look soft and puffy.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a beanie

  • Start the dome with a light pencil line, then press harder once the curve looks right. It is easier to fix a wobbly arch before you commit.
  • The zigzags are the trickiest part. Make tiny dots where each peak and valley will go, then connect the dots with a wavy line.
  • For the cuff ribs, draw the middle line first and then add three on each side. That keeps the spacing even.
