  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: Top of the head

Near the top of your paper, draw a curved line like an upside-down U or a little dome. This is the top of the head, and you leave the bottom open for now.

  3. Step 3: Face, chest and rings

Add two round dots for eyes and a small smile. Then draw a small rounded chest shape under the head, and a column of short curved lines going down for the body sections, ending with a little blob for the tail tip.

  4. Step 4: The long body

Draw two long lines down from the chest, one on each side of the short curved lines. Let them slowly get closer together and meet at the tail tip.

  5. Step 5: The top wings

Start near the chest and draw a long, stretched-out oval going out to the side. Do the same on the other side so the two wings match.

  6. Step 6: The lower wings

Under the top wings, start near the chest and draw two more long ovals that stretch down and out. Make them point toward the bottom corners of your paper.

  7. Step 7: Lines in the top wings

Inside each top wing, draw one curved line that follows the shape of the wing. Leave a little space between the line and the wing edge.

  8. Step 8: Lines in the lower wings

Do the same in the lower wings with one long curved line inside each. Try to make both lines look alike.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a dragonfly

  • Draw the two top wings first and look at them together, so they stretch out the same distance on each side.
  • The long body is the trickiest part. Start wide at the chest and get narrower toward the tail, and keep the section lines short and slightly curved.
  • Draw the lines inside the wings last and keep them gentle and curved, like the edge of a leaf.

Dragonfly fun fact for kids

A dragonfly can move each of its four wings on its own, so it can fly forward, backward, and even hover in one spot.

Questions about drawing a dragonfly

What shapes do I need to draw a dragonfly?

You need a dome and curved lines for the head, a small rounded chest, and four long ovals for the wings. Two long lines and a few short curved lines make the body, and one curved line inside each wing finishes it.

How do I make my dragonfly look cuter?

Give it two round eyes and a small smile on its head. Make the wings big and rounded instead of pointy.

How do I make both wings match?

Draw one wing, then draw the matching one on the other side before moving on. Check that they reach about the same height and length.
