How to Draw a Toucan (Easy Step by Step)
A toucan is fun to draw because of its giant, curvy beak, and it is built from just a few easy shapes: a hill-shaped beak, a round head, an egg-shaped body, and some leaf shapes. Once you can draw those, you can draw a whole bird sitting on its branch.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The eye dot
Make one small dot near the top middle of your paper. This dot marks where your toucan's eye will go.
Step 3: Head and beak
Start at the left, draw a big beak shaped like a rounded hill with a flat bottom. Then curve the line up and around the dot to make a round head, and bring it back down on the right side.
Step 4: The body curve
Start under the head and draw a long curve that bends down and to the left, then sweeps around the bottom and ends at the right. It looks like the left half of an egg.
Step 5: Branch and legs
Draw a long rounded rectangle near the bottom for the branch. Add two short straight lines going up from the branch for legs, and a tiny line at the right end of the body to finish its bottom.
Step 6: The wing
On the right side of the body, draw a curved line from the shoulder down to the bottom to make the outside of the wing. Inside it, draw a long, thin leaf shape pointing down.
Step 7: The tail
At the bottom right, just under the wing, draw a small pointy leaf shape that sticks out to the right, just above the branch.
Step 8: The eye ring
Draw a ring around the dot to make the eye. The dot stays in the middle.
Step 9: Mouth and chest line
Draw a long, gently curved line from the beak tip back toward the eye to show the mouth. Then draw a curved smile shape on the chest.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a toucan
- Draw the beak as a hill shape with a flat bottom, and make it big. A toucan's beak is almost as long as the rest of its body, so do not be shy.
- Keep the wing as a long, skinny leaf inside a curved line. If it comes out too fat, it will cover the whole body, so start near the shoulder and curve down slowly.
- Draw the two legs the same height so they both reach the branch. Take your time on the branch so it sits right under the feet.

How to color your toucan drawing
Color the beak bright orange and yellow, the body and wing black, and the chest patch white. For a creative twist, give your toucan a rainbow beak with stripes of every color.
Toucan fun fact for kids
A toucan's big beak is light because it is mostly hollow inside, with a thin outer shell held up by tiny bony struts.
