  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The cookie shape

Lightly sketch a big round circle in the middle of your page. Then trace over it, and near the top right swap the smooth line for three little scoops, like bumpy bite marks.

  3. Step 3: Eyes and smile

Draw two small dots in the middle of the cookie, side by side, for the eyes. Under them, draw a curved smile that looks like a gentle bowl.

  4. Step 4: Top chocolate chips

Near the top, draw two small wobbly rings, one on the upper left and one on the upper right, just below the bite marks. Think of them as lumpy donuts, and make each one a little different.

  5. Step 5: The left chip

On the left side of the cookie, beside the left eye, draw another lumpy ring. Make it a bit bigger than the top chips.

  6. Step 6: The right chip

On the right side, below the bite marks and next to the right eye, draw one more lumpy oval ring. Tilt it a little to the side.

  7. Step 7: Bottom chocolate chips

Near the bottom of the cookie, draw two last lumpy rings, one on the lower left and one on the lower right. Leave a little space between them and the smile.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Every step of the cookie drawing on one page. Save it for later.
  • Sketch the circle lightly first and turn the paper as you go. Round shapes are easier to draw when your hand can follow the curve.
  • The bite is the trickiest part. Draw three small, even scoops that sit side by side along the top right edge, like a row of little bumps.
  • Chips look best when they are all a little different. Make each ring lumpy and uneven, and tilt them in different directions.

Color the cookie golden tan, the chips dark chocolate brown and the smile and eyes black or dark brown. For a twist, turn it into a funfetti cookie with chips in rainbow colors.

The chocolate chip cookie was invented in the 1930s by Ruth Wakefield, who ran the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts. She chopped up a chocolate bar and stirred the pieces into her dough, and the chocolate stayed in chunks instead of melting in.
