Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Two cake tiers
Start with the top tier: draw a short box with rounded top corners. At its bottom corners, step out to the sides and draw the wider bottom tier going down. Leave the bottom open for now.
Step 3: The cake plate
Draw a long, flat plate with rounded bottom corners across the bottom of the cake. Make it stick out a little past the cake on both sides.
Step 4: The cake stand
Below the middle of the plate, draw two short lines going down. Join them to a small flat foot at the bottom, wider than the two lines.
Step 5: Wavy frosting
Near the top of each tier, draw a row of little bumps like a wavy line, from one side of the tier to the other.
Step 6: A happy face
On the bottom tier, draw two small dots for eyes. Draw a little curved smile between them.
Step 7: Three candles
On top of the cake, draw three tall, skinny candles side by side with small gaps between them. Each candle has a rounded top and its open bottom sits on the cake.
Step 8: Candle flames
Above each candle, draw a flame shaped like a teardrop with the pointy end up.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a birthday cake
- Draw the top tier and the bottom tier as one outline, and keep the top tier centered so the cake does not lean.
- For the frosting, make the bumps in the wavy line about the same size. Try making a row of small hills, one after another, without lifting your pencil.
- Make the three flames the same teardrop shape, with the pointy ends all facing up. Draw the first one, then copy it twice.
