How to draw a rain cloud step by step

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The cloud base

Draw a long flat line for the bottom of the cloud. At each end, curve up and around into a round bump, and stop just below the middle of the bump, so it looks like a wide, rounded U lying on its side.

  3. Step 3: The top puffs

Start at the top of the left bump and curve up and over to make one round puff. Dip down into a little notch in the middle, then curve up and over again and come down to meet the top of the right bump.

  4. Step 4: The happy face

Draw two small round dots for eyes, side by side in the middle of the cloud. Under them, add a little smile that curves like a bowl.

  5. Step 5: The outer raindrops

Under the cloud, draw one raindrop on the far left and one on the far right. Start each with a small point at the top, then curve out and around to make a round bottom, like a teardrop.

  6. Step 6: The middle raindrop

Draw a third raindrop right in the middle, under the cloud's smile. Make it the same teardrop shape, with a pointy top and a round bottom.

  7. Step 7: The lower raindrops

Finish with two more raindrops that sit a little lower than the others, one on each side of the middle drop. Make them the same teardrop shape, with the point on top and a round bottom.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a rain cloud

  • Draw the flat bottom line first and make it long. A wide base gives the puffs room to sit on top.
  • The notch where the two top puffs meet is the trickiest spot. Stop the first curve at a little dip, then start the second curve from that same spot.
  • For the raindrops, make the pointy top first and then draw the round bottom. Try to make all five about the same size, and put two a little lower than the others so the rain looks like it is falling.

Color the cloud a soft gray-blue and the raindrops a bright blue. For a creative twist, add a rainbow peeking out from behind the cloud.

Rain cloud fun fact for kids

Small raindrops are round like tiny balls, not shaped like teardrops. Bigger raindrops flatten on the bottom a bit like a hamburger bun as they fall.
