  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: Head outline

Draw a gentle curved line for the top of a wide head. Then draw a wide U-shaped curve below it for the cheeks and chin, leaving a small gap at each side.

  3. Step 3: Left gills

On the left side of the head, draw a big pointed leaf that starts at the top of the head and sweeps up and out. Then add two small wavy fingers underneath it, ending at the side of the head.

  4. Step 4: Right gills

Now copy the same shapes on the right side: a tall pointed leaf rising from the top of the head, with two wavy fingers below it. Try to make them about the same size as the left side.

  5. Step 5: Body and arms

Under the chin, draw two curved lines that slope down and out for the shoulders. Add a tiny curly hand at the end of each arm, then draw a bumpy line along the bottom for the feet.

  6. Step 6: The tail

On the right side of the body, draw a long curve that sweeps out and up to a point. Bring a second line back from the tip to the body so the tail closes into a leaf shape.

  7. Step 7: Eyes and smile

Draw two round eyes, spaced wide apart on the face, and fill them in. Add a tiny dot of shine in each eye, then a small wavy smile between and a little below them.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a baby axolotl

  • Draw the two gill sets one at a time, then compare them. If one side looks bigger, draw the other side a little larger next time.
  • The wavy fingers under each gill are the trickiest part. Think of them as two little scoops, one above the other, that end at the side of the head.
  • Place the eyes far apart and keep the smile small, with a bit of space around it. That makes the face look sweet and babyish.

Soft pink or peach for the body and a deeper pink for the gills looks just like a real axolotl. For a creative twist, give your axolotl rainbow gills or a pond background with bubbles.

Baby axolotl fun fact for kids

Axolotls are salamanders that live in water their whole lives, and they can regrow lost parts like legs and tails. The feathery frills on their heads are gills that they use to breathe.

Questions about drawing a baby axolotl

What shapes do I need to draw a baby axolotl?

You need a wide rounded shape for the head, a rounded body, and pointy leaf shapes for the gills. The tail is a long curve that comes to a point.

How do I make my axolotl look cuter?

Make the eyes round and wide apart, and keep the smile small. A tiny dot of shine in each eye makes it look happy and bright.

Why does an axolotl have feathery things on its head?

Those are its gills, which help it breathe underwater. In a drawing, we show them as big pointy leaves with little wavy fingers on each side.
