How to draw a valentine card step by step

How to Draw a Valentine Card · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The card

Draw a rectangle with softly rounded corners. Leave a small gap in the top edge near the middle, because the bow will go there.

  3. Step 3: The big heart

In the middle of the card, draw a big heart. Start with a small dip at the top, curve out into two round bumps, then swoop down to a point at the bottom.

  4. Step 4: The bow loops

In the gap at the top of the card, draw two small curled loops, one on the left and one on the right, like a pair of tiny ears. Leave a little space between them.

  5. Step 5: The bow knot

Between the loops, draw a small circle with a slightly bigger ring around it for the knot. Then add a short curved line sticking out from each side of the knot.

  6. Step 6: The ribbon tails

Draw two ribbon tails hanging down from the knot, one on each side. Make each one a short slanted strip with a little V notch cut into the bottom.

  7. Step 7: Corner hearts

Draw a small heart near the top left corner of the card and another near the top right corner. Fill them in with your pencil or marker.

  8. Step 8: Bottom row of hearts

Along the bottom of the card, draw a row of six little hearts. Make the two at the ends a bit bigger than the four in between, then fill them all in.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a valentine card

  • Draw the card rectangle lightly first, and leave a gap at the top so the bow has room to sit between the two ends of the line.
  • The big heart is the trickiest part. Make the two top bumps the same size, then draw lines down to the bottom point, and erase any sketch lines when you finish.
  • For the tiny hearts, practice a V shape with two bumps on top. Make the four middle hearts in the bottom row a little smaller than the two at the ends so the row looks neat.

How to color your valentine card drawing

Try pink and red for the big heart, with a bright ribbon bow in purple or gold. For a creative twist, write a short message inside the big heart, or color each tiny heart a different shade.

Valentine card fun fact for kids

One of the oldest valentine messages that still exists is a poem written in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was a prisoner in the Tower of London.

Questions about drawing a valentine card

What shapes do I need to draw a valentine card?

You need a rectangle for the card, a large heart in the middle, and a small circle with loops and tails for the bow. The small hearts are just smaller copies of the big one.

How do I make my valentine card look neater?

Sketch the rectangle and heart lightly with a pencil first, then go over them once you like the shape. Using a ruler for the card edges can also help.

How do I draw a heart that is not lopsided?

Draw a light line down the middle first. Then make one bump on each side of the line, and curve both sides down to meet at a point on that line.
