How to Draw an Iceberg (Easy Step by Step)

An iceberg is a fun drawing because only a small part shows above the water, and a much bigger part hides below. It is built from simple shapes: a big bowl, some pointy triangles, a wavy line, and a tiny penguin friend on the ledge.

How to draw an iceberg step by step

How to Draw an Iceberg · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The underwater ice

Start with a big round bowl shape at the bottom of the page, like a giant smile. This is the part of the iceberg hiding under the sea, and it is much bigger than the tip.

  3. Step 3: The wavy water line

Draw a long wavy line across the top of the bowl, going a little past it on both sides. This is the surface of the ocean.

  4. Step 4: The tall peaks

Starting at the left edge of the water, draw a line up to a pointy peak, then zigzag down and up to make a second, much taller peak in the middle. Then draw a line down from the tall peak and slant it to the water line.

  5. Step 5: The flat ledge

From the tall peak, draw a line down and over to a small peak on the right. Then draw a flat shelf running to the right, and a short slanted side down to the water.

  6. Step 6: Cracks in the ice

Add two short lines that drop downward, one on the left peak and one under the tall peak. These show where the ice is cracked.

  7. Step 7: The little penguin

On the flat ledge, draw a tall rounded shape like an upside-down U for a penguin's body, with its bottom sitting on the shelf.

  8. Step 8: The penguin's belly and flippers

Near the top inside the penguin, draw a small curved V shape for its white front. Then add a small curved flipper on each side of the body.

  9. Step 9: A curve under the sea

Inside the lower left of the bowl, draw one short curved line that starts higher up and bends downward. It makes the underwater ice look thick and lumpy.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an iceberg

  • Draw the big bowl first and make it wide. Leaving room above the water line keeps the peaks from running off the page.
  • For the peaks, think of triangles with different heights. Make the middle one the tallest so the iceberg looks grand.
  • The penguin is the trickiest part. Draw its body as a simple upside-down U first, then add the little V on its front and a flipper on each side.

How to color your iceberg drawing

Use light blue and pale teal for the ice, and a deeper blue for the water and the underwater part. Color the penguin black and white, and leave a little white in the peaks so they look snowy.

Iceberg fun fact for kids

About nine tenths of an iceberg is under the water, so the part you can see is only the tip.

Questions about drawing an iceberg

What shapes do I need to draw an iceberg?

You need a big rounded bowl for the underwater part and a few triangles for the peaks. A wavy line for the water ties them together.

How do I make my iceberg look big?

Make the underwater part much larger than the tip and add a tiny penguin on the ledge. Seeing something small next to the ice makes the iceberg feel huge.

How do I draw the wavy water line?

Draw a line that goes up and down like gentle hills, without lifting your pencil. Let it stretch past the iceberg on both sides.
