A sun hat is a great first drawing because it is mostly ovals and curves. You will build it from a wide flat oval for the brim, a tall dome for the crown, and a ribbon band with a flower and a bow. Each part is simple, and together they look like a hat you could wear to the beach.

How to draw a sun hat step by step

How to Draw a Sun Hat · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The wide brim

Draw a big, wide oval lying flat, like a pancake. Leave a small gap in the middle of the top edge, because the crown will sit there.

  3. Step 3: The tall crown

Start at one end of the gap in the top of the brim. Draw a tall dome like an upside-down U, curving up and over and coming back down to the other end of the gap.

  4. Step 4: The hat band

Draw a long, gently curved line across the crown, starting at its left side. Then draw a shorter curved line just below it to make the ribbon around the hat.

  5. Step 5: The flower

At the left end of the band, draw a small circle with a dot in the middle. Then draw rounded bumps all around it, like cloud puffs, to make flower petals.

  6. Step 6: The bow knot

At the right end of the band, draw a small, scribbly blob. This little knot is where the bow loops will join.

  7. Step 7: Bow loops and tails

Draw a small rounded loop on each side of the knot, like two little wings. Then add two short lines hanging down from the knot for the ribbon tails.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a sun hat

  • Draw the brim first and make it nice and wide. A wide oval makes the whole hat look floppy and sunny.
  • The ribbon lines can be tricky because they curve with the crown. Keep them gently bent, like a smile, and let the long one start at the left side of the crown.
  • For the bow, draw the little knot first and then add the loops on each side. It is much easier than trying to draw the whole bow in one go.

How to color your sun hat drawing

Try a sunny yellow straw color for the hat with a bright pink or sky blue ribbon. For a creative twist, color the flower in rainbow petals or add polka dots all over the brim.

Sun hat fun fact for kids

Wide-brimmed hats work like a small portable shade. The brim blocks sunlight from reaching your face, neck, and shoulders, which helps protect your skin on bright days.

Questions about drawing a sun hat

What shapes do I need to draw a sun hat?

You need a wide oval for the brim, a dome shape for the crown, and two curved lines for the band. The flower is a small circle with bumpy petals, and the bow is a knot with two loops and two tails.

How do I make my sun hat look more floppy?

Make the brim oval extra wide and a little wavy instead of perfectly smooth. A wider brim makes the hat look soft and relaxed.

Can I draw a sun hat without the bow or flower?

Yes. The brim, crown, and band make a complete hat on their own. Add the flower and bow when you want to make it fancier.
