A parade balloon is a giant, floating friend, and this one is a puppy with floppy ears and a big smile. You build it from a wide oval body, a round head, and some long lines. The ropes hanging down make it look ready to float down a city street.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Top and bottom of body
Following the light oval guide, draw a curved line across the top and another curved line across the bottom. Leave the left side open, because the head will cover it.
Step 3: Head, face and left ear
Draw a big circle on the left for the head, joined to the top line of the body. Add a floppy oval ear on its left, two dot eyes, a dot nose, and a curved smile. Then draw a short curved line from under the head down to the bottom of the body.
Step 4: The other ear
On the right side of the head, draw a second floppy ear. Start it at the head and curve it down and back up, like a soft bean in front of the body.
Step 5: Four little feet
Along the bottom of the body, draw short rounded feet, like tiny upside-down U shapes. Put two near the head and two near the tail.
Step 6: Stripe and tail
Draw a gently curved line from the top of the body down to the bottom, like a belt around the tummy. Then add a small curl at the back for a tail.
Step 7: Three ropes
From the bottom middle of the body, draw three long lines going down: one slanting left, one nearly straight, and one slanting right. These are the ropes the parade helpers hold.
Step 8: Little cloud
In the sky above the balloon's back, draw a small cloud. Make a flat line along the bottom and two soft bumps on top, then join the ends.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a parade balloon
- Draw the top and bottom of the body first and make them wide, so the head circle has room to cover the open left side.
- The floppy ears are the trickiest part. Start each one at the head and make a soft bean shape that droops down.
- Draw the three ropes near the end and let them spread out like a tent. Start each one at the bottom of the body and stop near the bottom of the page.

Parade balloon fun fact for kids
The giant character balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City are filled with helium, and teams of handlers hold ropes to guide them along the route.
