  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: Round head outline

Draw a big round shape for the head near the top of your page. Start at the left, curve up and over the top, and come down on the right, leaving a gap at the bottom where the body will go.

  3. Step 3: The boxy body

Under the head, draw a box with a straight top and slightly curved sides, a bit like a bucket. Make the bottom line curve gently downward, and leave a small gap in each side.

  4. Step 4: A happy face

Draw two little dots for eyes in the middle of the head. Add a small curved smile below them, like a little bowl.

  5. Step 5: Two oval feet

Under the body, draw two side-by-side ovals that touch in the middle, like a sideways number eight. They are the kid's feet.

  6. Step 6: Little round hands

Draw a small curl on each side of the body, down low, for the hands. Each one is almost a circle with a little gap where an arm will come in.

  7. Step 7: Arms, legs and lights

Draw curved arms from the sides of the body to the hands, and two short lines for legs between the body and the feet. Then draw a wiggly string across the body with small tilted ovals for bulbs, and let the end of the string trail off to the right.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a kid with Christmas lights

  • Draw the bulbs as small tilted ovals, a bit like eggs. They do not need to match, since lights look best when each one is a little different.
  • Keep the string of lights as one wiggly line that passes from bulb to bulb. Go slowly and let the line bend gently instead of sharply.
  • Draw the two feet ovals so they touch in the middle. If one comes out bigger, that is fine, because kids' feet can look a little silly and still be charming.
