Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The big head
Draw a tall egg shape in the middle of your page, a little narrower at the top. This is the big trap of the plant.
Step 3: Stem and pot
Draw a wavy line straight down from the bottom of the head. Then draw a long, flat rectangle at the bottom for the rim, with a rounded bowl shape hanging below it.
Step 4: Two side traps
Draw two small ovals, one on each side of the head, a little higher than the pot. Leave space between them and the big head.
Step 5: Curvy stalks
Draw a bendy line from the bottom of each small oval down to the pot rim. They should curve like gentle slides.
Step 6: The open mouth
Draw a curved line across the middle of the head like a hill, and a smile-shaped curve below it. The two lines meet at the edges of the head to make a wide mouth.
Step 7: Eyes and teeth
Add two small round dots for eyes near the top of the head. Then draw pointy triangle teeth hanging down from the top lip and pointing up from the bottom lip.
Step 8: Zigzag lines
Draw a wiggly zigzag line down the middle of each small oval, from near the top to near the bottom.
Step 9: Happy pot face
Give the pot a sweet face. Draw two round dots for eyes and a small curved smile between them.
Step 10: The buzzing fly
Up in the corner, draw a small round body with a dot for an eye. Add two loopy oval wings on top, so the fly looks ready to zoom.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a Venus flytrap
- Draw the big head egg first and keep it light. Every other part is placed around it, so a good starting shape makes the rest easier.
- The teeth are the trickiest part. Make them small triangles, with the top teeth pointing down and the bottom teeth pointing up, and leave small gaps between them.
- For the side traps, start the zigzag near the top of the oval and let it end near the bottom. Short, sharp bends look better than long ones.

How to color your Venus flytrap drawing
Color the head and side traps in bright green with pink or red inside the mouth, and make the pot orange or terracotta. For a creative twist, give the fly rainbow wings or turn the pot into a polka-dot one.
Venus flytrap fun fact for kids
A real Venus flytrap snaps its leaves shut when an insect touches the tiny hairs inside twice in a short time. It only grows wild in a small part of North and South Carolina.
Questions about drawing a Venus flytrap
What shapes do I need to draw a Venus flytrap?
You need an egg shape for the head, small ovals for the side traps, wavy lines for the stems, and triangles for the teeth. The pot is a rectangle with a rounded bowl underneath.
How do I make my Venus flytrap look cuter?
Give it round dot eyes and a big open mouth, then add a smiling face on the pot too. Making the teeth small keeps it friendly rather than scary.
How do I draw the teeth so they fit?
Draw the mouth lines first, then add one tooth at a time along each line, spacing them evenly. Try making the top and bottom teeth line up like a zipper.
