How to Draw Popeye (Easy Step by Step)
Popeye is a cartoon sailor who winks, holds a pipe, and flexes a big arm. This guide builds him from simple shapes: a flat sailor cap, a wide shirt with a scarf, a bent arm, and short legs with round boots. Once you see the shapes, he is easy to draw.

Step 1: Side of the face
Draw a short curved line for the right side of the face. Give it a small round bump in the middle where the ear goes.
Step 2: The sailor cap
Draw a flat, puffy cap above the face, wider on the left and rounded on top. Close the bottom with a gently curved line, so the cap sits on the head.
Step 3: Shoulder and hip arm
Start under the cheek and draw a big curve out to the right for the shoulder and arm. Bring the arm down to a little fist on the hip, then draw a long line left along the bottom of the shirt.
Step 4: Raised arm and left side
On the left, draw a big bent arm curving up and out like a round muscle, with a small cuff line inside it. Then draw the left side of the shirt down to a short leg and a rounded boot.
Step 5: The pipe
Draw a round pipe bowl by the raised fist and fill it in solid. Add a short stem sticking out to the right, and a little line on the hip arm for the wrist.
Step 6: Collar and scarf
Draw a big V-shaped collar down from each side of the neck. Add a small knot where the V meets, with two loops hanging below it, and a short line by the pipe stem.
Step 7: Shorts and other boot
Draw the bottom of the shorts with a little curved gap between the legs. Add a straight line down the right side and a rounded boot on the right foot.
Step 8: The face
Draw one small filled oval for an eye. Make a sideways V for the winking eye, then add a tiny wavy line for the mouth.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing Popeye
- Draw the cap light and a little wide. It helps you place the face under it.
- The raised arm is the trickiest part. Think of it as a bent sausage with a round bump for the muscle.
- Draw the wink as a sideways V, and keep the other eye a small filled oval. The two different eyes give Popeye his personality.

How to color your Popeye drawing
Color the cap and shirt white with a blue scarf and blue shorts, and give Popeye a warm peach face and arms. Leave the pipe bowl dark and color the boots brown.

Questions about drawing Popeye
What shapes do I need to draw Popeye?
You need a flat puffy shape for the cap, a wide rounded shape for the shirt, and short rounded shapes for the shorts and boots. Small ovals make the eye and the scarf loops, and a round shape makes the pipe bowl.
How do I draw Popeye's wink?
Draw a small sideways V, like a less-than sign, where one eye goes. Keep the other eye as a small filled oval so it looks like he is winking.
How do I make Popeye look stronger?
Make the raised arm big and round at the elbow, and draw the shirt wide at the shoulders. Putting the other hand on the hip helps too.
