Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The round body
Draw a big egg shape for the body, a little wider than it is tall. Leave a small gap at the top left where the head will sit.
Step 3: The round head
Draw a big circle that overlaps the top left of the body. This is the sparrow's head.
Step 4: Beak and cheek
Draw a small triangle sticking out from the left side of the head for the beak. Then add a short curved line from the beak down to the bottom of the head to close in the cheek.
Step 5: Head cap
Draw a curved line across the top of the head, like a little hat. It starts on one side of the circle and ends on the other.
Step 6: Face
Add two round dots for eyes in the middle of the head. Under them, draw a small curved smile.
Step 7: Wing and first leg
Draw a rounded oval wing on the lower right of the body. Inside it, add two curved lines to make feathers. Then draw one short straight line going down from the bottom of the body for a leg.
Step 8: The tail
Draw a pointed leaf shape sticking out from the right side of the body, like a little fan.
Step 9: Second leg and ground
Draw a second straight line going down beside the first one for the other leg. Then draw a long, almost flat line underneath for the ground, crossing the bottoms of both legs.
Step 10: Seeds on the ground
Draw two small ovals on the ground in front of the sparrow. These are the seeds.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a sparrow
- Draw the body egg first and the head circle second, so the head can overlap the body and look like it is sitting on top.
- The curved line across the head is the trickiest part. Start at one side of the circle and swoop up and over to the other side, like a rainbow.
- Draw the two legs as straight lines of the same length, so the sparrow stands up straight on the ground line.

Sparrow fun fact for kids
Sparrows take dust baths. They flutter in loose, dry dirt to help keep their feathers in good shape.
