Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Dad's head and body
Draw a big circle for dad's head near the top left of the page. Then draw a tall rounded rectangle just below it for his body.
Step 3: Dad's face
Inside the head, draw two round dots for eyes. Under them, draw a happy curved smile like a little bowl.
Step 4: Dad's arm and legs
Draw one short slanted line out from the left side of his body for an arm. Then draw two straight legs down from the bottom of the body, each with a little foot turned outward.
Step 5: Mom's head and dress
Next to dad, draw a smaller circle for mom's head, a little lower than his. Add two dot eyes and a smile, then draw a triangle dress that starts narrow at her neck and gets wide at the bottom.
Step 6: Mom's legs
Draw two straight legs down from the bottom of the dress, each with a little foot turned outward.
Step 7: Holding hands
Draw a short curvy line from dad's side over to mom's side, so their hands meet.
Step 8: Older child and baby body
Next to mom, draw a medium circle for the head with a small curl of hair on top, then a small rounded square for the body. Add two dot eyes, a smile, two short legs, and an arm reaching back to mom. Then draw a long arm from the child toward the right, and below it a small rounded body for the baby with two tiny legs, one arm holding hands and one arm waving up high. Add a tiny curl and a little f
Step 9: The baby's head
Draw a small circle around the baby's little face, so it becomes the baby's head with the curl sticking out on top.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a family
- Draw the biggest person first, then make each next person a little smaller so the family looks like it steps down in size.
- The hands are the trickiest part, so draw the arms as simple curved lines that touch, and do not worry about fingers.
- Keep all the heads round, and add a little curl of hair on top of the kids to tell them apart from the grown-ups.
- Draw the baby's face first and the head circle last, so you can center the circle around the face.

How to color your family drawing
Give each person their own shirt color, like blue for dad, purple for mom, and bright colors for the kids. For a twist, color the background as a sunny park with grass under their feet.
Family fun fact for kids
The English word family comes from the Latin word familia, which meant all the people who lived together in one household.
