  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The big round head

Draw a large oval for the head, a little wider than it is tall. Make it a smooth, round shape.

  3. Step 3: The body sides

Under the head, draw two curved lines, one on each side. Start each line at the lower edge of the head and curve it down and slightly in.

  4. Step 4: The first flipper

On one side of the body, draw a tilted oval for a flipper. Let the inner end touch the body line.

  5. Step 5: The back flippers

At the bottom, draw two plump ovals that touch in the middle like a pair of feet. Add a short curved line from each oval up to the body and side flipper.

  6. Step 6: Eyes and cheek dots

Draw two round dots for eyes, side by side in the middle of the head. Add a few tiny dots on each cheek below the eyes.

  7. Step 7: Nose and smile

Between the cheek dots, draw a small rounded nose and fill it in. Then draw a little wavy smile just under the nose.

  8. Step 8: Second flipper and claws

On the empty side of the body, draw a tilted oval for the second flipper, matching the first. Then add two short slanted lines near the tip of each side flipper for claws.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a baby seal

  • Draw the head first and keep it big. A big head is what makes the seal look like a baby.
  • The two back flippers touch in the middle, so draw one, then draw the second right up against it.
  • Keep the cheek dots small and evenly spaced. If they are too big, they start to look like freckles.
  • Make the two side flippers about the same size so your seal looks balanced.

How to color your baby seal drawing

Try soft gray or silver for the body with a darker nose and eyes, and light blue for the flippers. For a creative twist, draw a splash of icy water and a snowy rock for your seal to sit on.

Baby seal fun fact for kids

Baby seals are called pups, and many harp seal pups are born with soft white fur that helps them blend in with the snow and ice.
