A jump rope is a simple drawing built from one big heart-shaped loop and two chunky handles. One rope end stops just short of the other, which makes it look like the rope is passing behind. If you can draw a heart and two bumpy tubes, you can draw this.

How to draw a jump rope step by step

How to Draw a Jump Rope · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Left side of heart

Start at the dip in the top middle of the heart. Draw a smooth curve up and over to the left like a round hill, then let it slide down in a long slanted line toward the bottom middle. Stop before the line reaches the center.

  2. Step 2: Right side and long rope

Start at the same dip and curve up and over to the right to make the second round hill. Let the line slide down and in, cross under the middle of the heart, and keep going in a long straight line toward the bottom left.

  3. Step 3: Left handle

At the end of the long rope, draw a fat, slightly bumpy tube that points down and to the left, like a short sausage with a round end. The rope joins the top of the tube.

  4. Step 4: Right handle

On the bottom right, draw a second bumpy tube pointing down and to the right. It floats by itself for now. Make it about the same size as the first one so the handles match.

  5. Step 5: Left grip stripes

Inside the left handle, draw a few short slanted lines across the tube, with a little space between them. They make the cozy grip.

  6. Step 6: Short rope and stripes

Draw a short straight line from the top of the right handle going up and to the left. Stop before it touches the long rope, leaving a small gap. Then add a few slanted stripes inside the right handle.

  7. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a jump rope

  • Draw the two sides of the heart one at a time, and keep each curve smooth and slow so the top bumps look round.
  • Leave a small gap where the short rope almost meets the long rope. That gap makes the rope look like it passes behind.
  • Make both handles about the same length and thickness, and draw the stripes after the tubes so they fit neatly inside.

Questions about drawing a jump rope

What shapes do I need to draw a jump rope?

You need a heart shape for the rope loop and two bumpy tubes for the handles. Short slanted lines make the grip stripes.

How do I make my jump rope heart look smooth?

Draw each side of the heart in one slow, steady line instead of lots of short ones. Lightly sketching the heart with pencil first can help.

How do I make the rope look like it passes behind?

Let the long rope run all the way down to its handle, and stop the short rope just before it, leaving a tiny gap. Your eye will read it as one rope passing behind the other.
