How to Draw a Spinning Top (Easy Step by Step)
A spinning top is a fun toy to draw because it is made from a few simple shapes: a round body, a pointy tip, a little rectangle and a circle on top. A stripe with three small stars makes it look painted, and the swoosh lines at the bottom make it look like it is really spinning.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Body and tip side
Draw a big rounded body like a fat acorn, with a curved line across the bottom. Then draw one straight line from the right side of the body down to a point.
Step 3: Other side of tip
Draw a straight line from the bottom left of the body down to the point. Now the two lines meet to make a pointed tip, like an upside-down triangle.
Step 4: The handle stem
On top of the body, draw a short, narrow rectangle that stands up like a little chimney. Its bottom touches the top of the body.
Step 5: The round knob
Draw a circle sitting on top of the stem. The bottom of the circle touches the top of the stem.
Step 6: The stripe line
Draw a gently curved line across the upper part of the body, from the left side to the right side. It bends a little like a smile.
Step 7: Three stars
Between the stripe line and the bottom of the body, draw three small stars in a row. Make each one a simple five-point star outline.
Step 8: Spinning swoosh lines
Under the tip, draw two curved lines that look like smiles, a short one above a longer one. They show the top spinning fast.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a spinning top
- Start the body as a big rounded shape, a little wider in the middle, so the tip has room to point down from it.
- Make the stem narrow and short. If it is too tall, the circle on top will look like it is floating away.
- Draw each star as a small five-point outline. Do not worry if the points are not even, because that looks hand-painted.

Spinning top fun fact for kids
Spinning tops are one of the oldest toys in the world. Archaeologists have found tops that are about 5,000 years old, and children in many countries still play with them today.
Questions about drawing a spinning top
What shapes do I need to draw a spinning top?

How do I make my spinning top look like it is spinning?
Draw two curved lines under the tip, like little smiles. They look like the path of the top as it whirls around.
How do I draw a star that looks good?
Make five points around a small center, like a little flower, then connect each point to the next one. Keep the star small and simple, and it will fit in the stripe.
