Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Bucket body
Draw a tall bucket shape that is wider at the top than the bottom, with straight sides and rounded bottom corners. Curve the top into a soft dome, and leave a small gap near the top where the shovel will poke out.
Step 3: Rim and band
Draw a long, flat oval across the upper part of the bucket for the opening, leaving a tiny gap in its back line near the top right. Then add one more curved line a little lower to make a stripe around the bucket.
Step 4: The shovel
Draw a small rounded rectangle above the bucket for the shovel handle. Under it, draw two straight lines going down into the bucket, ending at the front of the rim.
Step 5: The bucket star
Draw a five-point star in the middle of the bucket. Start at the top point and zigzag out and in until you come back to the start.
Step 6: The sand castle
Next to the bucket, draw a block with straight sides that sits on the same ground line. Cut one square notch in the middle of the top edge to make two little towers.
Step 7: The castle door
Near the bottom of the castle, draw an upside-down U shape for the door. Its two legs sit right on the bottom line.
Step 8: The starfish
On the ground at the left of the bucket, draw a starfish with five points, just like the star on the bucket. Tilt it a little so it looks like it is resting on the sand.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a sand bucket and shovel
- Make the bucket wider at the top than the bottom. Draw the two side lines first and check that they lean toward each other before you add the rounded corners.
- The rim is the trickiest part. Draw it as a long, flat oval, and leave a tiny gap in the back line where the shovel goes so the shovel looks like it is inside the bucket.
- For the stars, draw a light five-point shape first. Put one point straight up, then add two points out to the sides and two at the bottom.

How to color your sand bucket and shovel drawing
Try a bright red or blue bucket, a yellow shovel, and a tan castle with a gray door. For a creative twist, give each star a different color.
Sand bucket and shovel fun fact for kids
Sand castles hold together because wet sand sticks. A thin film of water between the grains pulls them together, but dry sand and very soggy sand both fall apart.
Questions about drawing a sand bucket and shovel
What shapes do I need to draw a sand bucket?
You need a tall shape that is wider at the top, and a long flat oval for the opening. Add a rounded rectangle with two lines for the shovel and a star for decoration.
How do I make the shovel look like it is inside the bucket?
Leave a small gap in the back of the rim where the shovel comes down, and let the shovel lines end at the front of the rim. This makes the shovel look like it sits inside.
How do I draw a star that looks even?
