How to Draw a Woolly Mammoth (Easy Step by Step)
A woolly mammoth is a great first animal to draw because it is mostly big, friendly shapes. You will draw a big rounded body and head in one line, a long trunk and tusk, a fuzzy fur skirt, and four sturdy legs. It looks like an elephant, so kids can use what they already know.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Head, back and trunk
Start with the top of the head and draw a big rounded line over the back, curving down the right side to the first back leg. Then go back to the head and draw the front line curling down into a long trunk with a little curl at the end.
Step 3: The tusk
Next to the trunk, draw a long curved tusk that starts near the face and sweeps down and out to a hooked tip on the left. It looks a bit like a big letter J.
Step 4: Trunk fold
Inside the trunk, draw a short gentle curve from near the middle of the trunk down to the bottom, ending in a little curl. This line makes the trunk look bendy.
Step 5: The ear
On the head, behind where the eye will go, draw a small tilted oval for the ear. Keep it a little taller than it is wide.
Step 6: The eye
Near the front of the head, above the trunk, add one small round dot for the eye.
Step 7: Woolly fur skirt
Across the bottom of the body, draw a row of little bumpy scallops, like a wavy line of tiny hills. This is the shaggy fur that hangs down.
Step 8: Three more legs
Under the fur, draw three tall legs next to the one you already have, each with straight sides and a rounded bottom. Space them out evenly and make them about the same height.
Step 9: Toenails
At the bottom of each foot, draw a small wavy line with two tiny bumps. These are the toenails peeking out.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a woolly mammoth
- Draw the big head and back line first and keep it large and smooth. Let the line curl down into the trunk.
- The trunk is the trickiest part. Draw it as one long, slightly wiggly tube that curls at the end, and take it slowly.
- For the fur skirt, make the scallops about the same size, like a row of little hills. They do not have to be perfect to look woolly.
