Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The bottom book
Draw a long, wide rectangle with softly rounded corners near the bottom of the page. This is the biggest book, so it sits at the bottom of the stack.
Step 3: The middle and top books
Draw a slightly shorter rounded rectangle sitting on the bottom book, a little to the left of its right end. Then draw a third, shorter rounded rectangle on top of it, pushed a bit more to the left.
Step 4: The apple
Sit a round, plump apple on top of the stack, with a little dip at the top in the middle. Add a short curved stem and a leaf shaped like a pointy oval.
Step 5: The apple's face
Give the apple two small round dots for eyes. Add a little curved smile between them.
Step 6: The book spines
Near the left end of each book, draw two straight up-and-down lines close together from the top edge to the bottom edge. These are the bands on the spine.
Step 7: The title lines
Near the right end of each book, draw one short, straight line. It looks like a title label.
Step 8: The bookmark
Under the right end of the bottom book, draw a small ribbon that hangs down like a short, narrow U. Add a little notch at the bottom end.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a stack of books
- Make each book a little shorter than the one below it so the stack looks like real books, not copies of one rectangle.
- Draw the apple after the books and let its bottom rest right on the top edge of the top book, so it seems to sit there.
- Keep the spine lines straight by drawing each one from the top edge to the bottom edge of the book in one steady stroke.
