How to Draw a Black Cat (Easy Step by Step)
This cute cat in a witch hat is built from simple, rounded lines: two pointy ears, a chubby body, three little legs, a curly tail and a big pointed hat. The round, chubby style is forgiving, so wobbly lines still look adorable. It is a great Halloween drawing for beginners.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Ears and left side
Start with the left ear: draw a small pointy bump, then curve down around the cheek and along the left side of the body to the bottom. Then draw the right ear and the right cheek, stopping at about the middle of the body.
Step 3: Right side of body
Under the right cheek, start a little way in from the edge and draw one long curved line that bulges out and slopes down toward the floor. This is the cat's back and makes the body round.
Step 4: The witch hat
Draw a wide flat oval on top of the head for the brim, overlapping the ears. Draw a tall bendy cone rising from the middle of the brim, with the tip flopping over to one side, and fill it in solid. Leave a white stripe above the brim for the hat band.
Step 5: Front legs
At the bottom of the body, draw three short lines going up from the floor, with the middle one straight and the outer two leaning a little. Join them with small curved bumps at the bottom so the paws look round.
Step 6: The curly tail
Start at the bottom edge of the body on the right and draw one long curve that swoops out and up. Finish with a little curl at the top so the tail looks like a question mark.
Step 7: Big round eyes
Draw two small circles on the face, side by side with a gap between them, and fill them in solid. Keep them the same size so your cat looks friendly.
Step 8: Mouth and whiskers
Between the eyes and a little lower, draw a tiny wavy smile like a small letter w. Then add two short lines sticking out on each cheek for whiskers.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a black cat
- Leave room above the head before you start, so the tall hat has space and does not run off the page.
- The hat brim should overlap the top of the head and the ears. Draw the brim as a flat oval, then draw the cone rising from it.
- Keep the two eyes the same size by drawing them one after the other, with a gap between them about as wide as one eye.

How to color your black cat drawing
Color the cat jet black or leave it white with a dark hat. Give the hat band a bright color like orange or purple. For a creative twist, add tiny yellow stars floating around the hat.
Black cat fun fact for kids
Cats use their whiskers to feel the world around them. Whiskers help a cat sense how narrow a gap is, so it knows whether it can squeeze through.
