How to Draw a Hydrangea (Easy Step by Step)

Step 1: The middle flower
Near the middle of your page, draw the bumpy outline of a flower, like a puffy cloud, and put a dot in the center. Then draw a wavy line curving down and to the left from its lower side.
Step 2: The top flower
Above the middle flower, draw another bumpy flower with a dot in the center. Add a small curve peeking out on the left and a little pointed bump peeking out on the right, then finish the right side of the middle flower.
Step 3: Upper left flowers
Next to the top flower on the left, draw a bumpy flower with a dot in the center. Draw another flower below it and a half flower tucked at the far left, each with a dot in the center.
Step 4: Lower left flowers
Below the left flowers, draw a bumpy flower with a dot in the center. Then draw one more flower under and to the right of it, so the flowers start to curve into a ball.
Step 5: Right side flowers
On the right, draw a bumpy flower with a dot in the center. Draw a second one under it, and add the wavy edge of a half flower tucked behind them.
Step 6: The bottom flower
At the bottom of the ball, draw one more bumpy flower with a dot in the center. Its petals can overlap the flowers next to it.
Step 7: Bottom right flower
Draw one more bumpy flower at the bottom right with a dot in the center. Then add two small dots and a short curved line in the gap in the middle.
Step 8: The stem
Under the bottom flower, draw two straight lines going down, close together, like a little tube. Close the bottom with a small curve.
Step 9: Leaves and veins
Draw a pointed leaf on each side of the stem, like a long lemon slice. Then add one curved line inside each leaf for the vein.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a hydrangea
- Start with the middle flower and build outward. It is easier to tuck new flowers behind ones you already drew.
- Let the petals overlap. When a flower sits in front of another, stop your line where it touches the front flower.
- Draw all the flowers about the same size, with a dot in each center, and the ball will look full and round.

How to color your hydrangea drawing
Try soft blues, purples and pinks for the flowers, with a darker color for the dots, and green for the stem and leaves. For a creative twist, color every flower a different shade, like a rainbow bush.
Hydrangea fun fact for kids
Hydrangea flowers can change color depending on the soil. In acidic soil they often turn blue, and in less acidic soil they tend to turn pink.
Questions about drawing a hydrangea
What shapes do I need to draw a hydrangea?
You need a circle with five bumps for each flower, a long thin tube for the stem, and a pointed oval for each leaf.
How do I make my hydrangea look full?
Draw lots of flowers that overlap each other and arrange them in a big round ball. Tucking some flowers halfway behind others makes it look thick.
Can I draw a hydrangea with fewer flowers?
Yes. Draw five or six flowers instead, and it still looks like a hydrangea. Just keep them close together in a round shape.
