Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Head, back and belly
Start at the right side of the top and draw a big curve that goes up and over the back, down the left side for the face, and around to the bottom. Stop near the middle of the bottom and leave the right side open for the tail.
Step 3: The heart tail
Continue the bottom line to the right so it swoops up into a tail stalk. At the top, draw a heart shape for the tail, then bring the other side of the stalk down to meet the back of the body.
Step 4: The water spout
Above the head, draw a short straight line going up. At the top, add two curved lines that branch out like a letter Y, then put a little dot on each side.
Step 5: The flipper
On the lower part of the body, draw a leaf shape. Make two curved lines that meet in a point at each end.
Step 6: The eye
Near the left side of the head, draw a small round dot for the eye.
Step 7: The happy smile
Start at the left edge of the face and draw a long, gentle curve like a smile. Stop it before it reaches the flipper.
Step 8: Belly lines
Below the smile, near the bottom left of the body, draw two short curved lines, one above the other. These are the whale's belly grooves.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a baby whale
- Take your time with the first big curve. If the shape looks too flat, make the belly rounder than the back.
- The tail is the trickiest part. Swoop the bottom line up into a stalk, then add the heart shape on top.
- Keep the eye a small dot near the left side of the head, above the smile, so the whale looks sweet and sleepy.
