How to draw an autumn landscape step by step

How to Draw an Autumn Landscape · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Two hills

Draw a big gentle hump for the tallest hill on the right. Then draw a lower hump on the left, and let its line curve down to meet the big hill and slide a little way past it.

  2. Step 2: Rolling front hills

Draw a long curved line that starts low on the left, rises to the middle, and sweeps right to make the top of a front hill. Add a second long swoopy line that slides down toward the bottom right, plus a tiny dash on the far right for the edge of the ground.

  3. Step 3: The tall tree

Draw a tall egg shape standing on its end at the right, with its bottom resting on the hill line. Add a short straight line inside near the bottom for its trunk.

  4. Step 4: The round bush

Next to the tall tree, draw a small bumpy cloud shape with a flat bottom that sits on the hill line.

  5. Step 5: The left tree

On the left, draw a big round puffy top with a couple of little bumps. Draw a trunk coming down from the middle of the bottom, and add a small V inside the top of the trunk for two branches.

  6. Step 6: The right tree

At the bottom right, draw another big round puffy top that overlaps the tall tree a little. Add a trunk growing down from the middle, with a small Y inside the top for two branches.

  7. Step 7: Stones and rocks

Draw a filled-in dot and a tiny ring on the front hill. Then draw a larger oval on the ground near the bottom left.

  8. Step 8: Grass dots

Dot tiny pairs and trios of specks across the ground to look like little tufts of grass and fallen seeds.

  9. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an autumn landscape

  • Draw the hills first and keep the lines light. The trees overlap them, so you can erase a little where the trees go.
  • The right tree is the trickiest because it overlaps the tall tree. Start its round top lower than the tall tree and let the two shapes touch.
  • Keep the little dots and ovals small and uneven. Mixing a few sizes makes the ground look like real grass and stones.

How to color your autumn landscape drawing

Try oranges, reds, and golden yellows for the tree tops, with soft green and tan hills behind them. For a creative twist, make each tree a different fall color, or color one hill purple for a sunset glow.

Autumn landscape fun fact for kids

Leaves turn yellow and orange in the fall because those colors were hiding in them all summer. Green chlorophyll breaks down when days get shorter, and the other colors show through.

Questions about drawing an autumn landscape

What shapes do I need to draw an autumn landscape?

You need curved lines for the hills, round puffy shapes for the trees, an egg shape for the tall tree, and small dots and ovals for rocks and grass.

How do I make the trees look like they are in front of the hills?

Draw the hills first, then draw the trees on top so their lines overlap. Erase any hill line that runs through a tree.

How do I make my autumn scene look more like fall?

Color the tree tops in orange, red, and yellow, and use tan and soft green for the hills. Giving each tree a different fall color makes the scene feel full of life.
