Step 1: Snout, head and back
Start at the tip of the nose and draw a long, flat snout. Then curve up and over to make a big round head, and keep going down the back in a smooth curve toward the ground.
Step 2: Chin, chest and front foot
Start under the snout and draw a short curve for the chin. Then draw a long, gently curving line down for the chest, and finish with a little curl at the bottom for a front foot.
Step 3: The tail
On the right side, where the round back reaches the ground, draw a flat, pointed tail. Make it a short curve out and a long curve back, like a little paddle.
Step 4: The back leg
Near the bottom of the body, draw a short curved line that bends like a hook. This is the back leg, tucked in as the desman sits.
Step 5: Front legs
Near the front foot, draw one short slanted line and one short straight line going down. Join them at the bottom to make the front leg and paw.
Step 6: Ground line and toes
Draw a wavy line along the bottom, from the front paws across to the tail, to make little toes and the bottom of the body. Add one tiny tick mark beside the back leg.
Step 7: The eye
Near the snout, draw a small round dot, as round as a pea. Fill it in with your pencil.
Step 8: The ear
Up on the head, a bit behind the eye, draw a tiny curved squiggle. This is the ear.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a desman
- Draw the snout, head and back as one smooth line so it flows from the nose over the top without stopping.
- The little feet are the trickiest part, so make them short wavy bumps along the ground and do not worry about getting each toe perfect.
- Keep the eye small and place it close to the snout so your desman looks curious and sweet.
