A sleeping kitten curled into a ball is one of the easiest cute animals to draw, because it is mostly smooth round curves. You will build it from a bean-shaped head, a big donut-like body, a small oval paw, a few little face lines, and a couple of Zs. The kitten's eyes are closed, so there is nothing tricky to draw there.

How to draw a sleeping kitten step by step

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The head

Draw a big rounded shape for the head, like a soft bean. Add a pointy ear peeking up on the right and a small bumpy ear on the left.

  3. Step 3: The curled body

Start where the head meets the right side and draw a big round curve that sweeps down and around. Keep going along the bottom and back up to the left, so the body hugs the head like a cozy donut.

  4. Step 4: Paw and arm

Near the chin, draw a small oval for the tucked paw. Then add a short curved line trailing away from the paw to the right to show the little arm.

  5. Step 5: Sleepy face

Draw two short curved lines for closed eyes, one on the left and one on the right, each bending down like a tiny upside-down smile. Between them, add a little wiggly line for the nose and mouth.

  6. Step 6: Back leg and tail

On the right side of the body, draw a long curve that bulges to the left, like a letter C, to make the back leg. At the bottom of that curve, draw a short curve that sweeps to the right and curls up a little for the tail.

  7. Step 7: Sleepy Zs

Above the kitten's head on the right, draw two letter Zs, a small one and a bigger one. They show that the kitten is fast asleep.

  8. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a sleeping kitten

  • Draw the head first and leave room for the body to wrap around it. If the head is too big, the body will not fit on the page.
  • The little paw oval is the trickiest part. Make it slightly squished and tuck it near the chin so it looks like a pillow.
  • Keep the eyes as short, gentle curves that bend downward. Straight lines can make the kitten look grumpy instead of sleepy.

Kittens sleep a lot, often 16 to 20 hours a day, and curling up in a ball helps them stay warm.
