This little elf is full of holiday cheer, and it is built almost entirely from simple shapes: circles, ovals and rectangles. The floppy hat with its curl and pom-pom, the pointy ears and the curly shoes give the elf lots of personality. Holding a toy makes it feel like the elf is right in the middle of a busy workshop.

How to draw an elf with a toy step by step

How to Draw an Elf with a Toy · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.

  2. Step 2: The round head

Draw a big circle for the head, a little wider at the top. Leave the top a bit flat, where the hat will sit.

  3. Step 3: Hat band and hat

Draw a long flat oval across the top of the head for the hat band. Then draw a tall curved line that rises from the band and bends over to the right for the pointy hat.

  4. Step 4: Curl and pom-pom

Near the right side of the hat, draw a small curly hook that bends out to the right. Finish with a small circle at the end for the pom-pom.

  5. Step 5: Pointy ears

On each side of the head, draw a long pointy shape, like a leaf, stretching out to the side. Make the two ears match.

  6. Step 6: The tunic body

Under the head, draw a tall rounded box for the tunic. Add a smaller tall rectangle in the middle for the front.

  7. Step 7: Face, arms and legs

Add two dots for eyes and a curved smile. Draw a wavy collar below the chin and a belt line across the tunic. Then draw two thin arms ending in small circle hands, and two straight legs with a short flat foot line at the bottom of each.

  8. Step 8: Curly shoes

At the bottom of each leg, draw a flat oval for the shoe. Then add a little curl at the outside end of each one so the toes curl up.

  9. Step 9: The toys

In one hand, draw a small rectangle on a stick, like a sign. In the other hand, draw a toy train from boxes: a long body, a tall front, a small square on top, and a wheel.

  10. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an elf with a toy

  • Draw the head circle first and keep it light. The hat band and ears line up with it, so a good circle makes everything else easier.
  • The two ears should be about the same height. Start each one where the head is widest and point them slightly upward.
  • The toy train is the trickiest part. Draw the long body first, then add the tall front and the little square on top, and finish with the wheel.
