Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The round face
Draw a big circle in the middle of your paper. Make it as round as you can, but a little wobble is just fine.
Step 3: Raised eyebrows
Near the top of the face, draw two curved arches like little rainbows, one on the left and one on the right. Keep them the same size, with a gap between them.
Step 4: Wide open eyes
Under the eyebrows, draw two small circles side by side, one under each arch. Make them the same size and round.
Step 5: Little pupils
Draw a small dot in the middle of each eye circle and fill it in dark. Keep the dots the same size.
Step 6: The open mouth
Draw a tall oval in the lower middle of the face for a mouth that says "Oh!" Leave it empty inside.
Step 7: Rosy cheeks
On each side of the face, near the edge, draw a small flat oval for a cheek. Draw the left one and then the right one at the same height.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a surprised face
- Draw both eyebrows at the same height and the same shape, high above the eyes, so the face looks surprised.
- Draw the first eye circle, then the second one at the same height on the other side. Leave a gap between them a little wider than one eye.
- Make the mouth taller than it is wide. A tall oval looks like a gasp.

Surprised face fun fact for kids
People all over the world make a similar surprised look: the eyebrows go up, the eyes open wide, and the mouth drops open. Scientists think the raised eyebrows and wide eyes let us take in more of what is around us.
