A hobby horse is a toy horse head on a stick, made for galloping around the yard. This drawing is built from simple shapes: a long rounded head, two pointed ears, a few dots and loops, and a straight stick. It is a fun one because the big loopy reins and the little wheel make it look ready to ride.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The head
Draw a tall rounded shape like a long egg or a bean, with a gently curved top. Make it a little narrower toward the bottom, with a rounded chin.
Step 3: Ears and forelock
Draw two pointed leaf shapes on top of the head, leaning slightly outward. Then draw a small pointed drop shape in the middle of the top of the head for the tuft of hair.
Step 4: The eyes
Add two round dots for eyes, side by side, about halfway down the head. Keep them the same size and the same height.
Step 5: The nose band
Draw a gently curved line across the lower part of the head, like a smile, from one side of the head to the other.
Step 6: Side loops and nostrils
At each end of the band, draw a small rounded loop that sticks out past the side of the head. Then add two tiny dots near the bottom of the nose for the nostrils.
Step 7: The reins
From each side loop, draw a big curve that swoops down and around under the chin. The two curves are mirror images and stop with a small gap between them in the middle.
Step 8: The stick
Draw two short straight lines going down from the gap below the chin. Keep them close together, parallel and the same length.
Step 9: The wheel
At the bottom of the two lines, draw a small circle to make the wheel. Put a dot in the center of it.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a hobby horse
- Sketch the head as a light oval first, then shape the narrower bottom. This keeps both sides of the head even.
- Draw the two reins so they match, starting from the side loops and curving down under the chin. If they are a little different, that is fine, since a hand-drawn toy can be wobbly.
- Draw the two lines of the stick slowly so they stay straight, and trace a coin to get a round wheel at the bottom.

In Finland there is a sport called hobby horsing, where people ride toy horses on sticks and jump them over fences, just like in real horse jumping.
