Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The round face
Draw a big circle in the middle of the page. Leave the bottom a little open, because the base will tuck in under it.
Step 3: Base and side walls
Draw a wide shape across the bottom with the two ends curling down and inward, like a long bumper. Then draw a tall straight line going up from each end of the base, one on the left and one on the right.
Step 4: Number 1
Draw a small number 1 on the right side, just inside the right wall. Add a tiny curl at the very top of the right wall.
Step 5: The funnel
Draw a funnel on top of the circle with a flat rounded cap at the top. Add two side lines that come down and meet the top of the circle.
Step 6: The curved roof
Draw a long curved line from each side of the funnel out to the top of each wall, like a gentle hill. Finish each end with a little rounded corner.
Step 7: Eyes and smile
Draw two round dots for eyes in the middle of the face. Add a small smile like a letter U underneath them.
Step 8: Wheels
Draw a small circle at each end of the base, overlapping the bottom edge so it peeks out below. Then fill in the lower half of each circle with dark color.
Step 9: Roof and base lines
Draw a thin curved line under the roof on each side of the funnel, following the curve of the roof. Then draw a straight line along the bottom of the base between the two wheels.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing Thomas the Tank Engine
- Draw the big circle first and keep it light. The base and the funnel both connect to it, so everything lines up if the circle is in a good spot.
- The curved roof is the trickiest part. Start at the funnel and sweep out to the corner in one smooth motion, rather than many tiny lines.
- Make both wheels the same size by drawing the left one first and then matching the right one to it. Filling in the lower half of each helps them look round.

Thomas the Tank Engine fun fact for kids
Thomas the Tank Engine first appeared in storybooks by the Rev. W. Awdry in the 1940s. A tank engine carries its water in tanks on the engine itself, instead of in a separate car called a tender.
