Step 1: Top burst rays
Near the top of your page, draw a fan of seven short curved lines that spray out like a fountain. Make the middle ones lean up and the outer ones bend sideways.
Step 2: Middle burst rays
Just below the first rays, draw more curved lines that bend outward from the center of the burst. Make the ones on the far sides longer and the ones near the middle short.
Step 3: Long falling rays
Now draw long curved lines that droop down from the center like a weeping willow. Let the ones on the sides bend outward and the ones in the middle hang almost straight down.
Step 4: Little sparkle dashes
Add a few tiny short dashes near the bottom and left edge of the burst. They are the last sparks floating away.
Step 5: The hanging string
Under the fireworks, draw one big smile-shaped curve from the left side of the page to the right. This is the string the lanterns will hang from.
Step 6: Lantern outlines
Below the string, draw five rounded lantern shapes in a row, a little taller than wide and evenly spaced. Leave small gaps at the top and bottom of each one.
Step 7: Lantern ribs
Inside each lantern, draw two curved lines that bulge outward, like parentheses facing each other. They make the lantern look round and ribbed.
Step 8: Caps and hangers
On top of each lantern, draw a tiny flat rectangle for the cap. Add a short stick going up from the cap to touch the string.
Step 9: Bottom tassels
At the bottom of each lantern, draw a small flat rectangle for the base. Add a tiny line dangling from it for the tassel.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing Lunar New Year fireworks
- Draw each firework ray in one smooth swoosh, curving outward from the center. Don't worry if they aren't identical, since real fireworks never are.
- Space the five lanterns evenly by marking their spots under the string with tiny dots before you draw any lanterns.
- The curved ribs inside the lanterns are the trickiest part. Draw them like two parentheses, ( ), and keep them the same distance from the edges on both sides.
