A heart lock and key is a fun drawing because it tells a little story: the key opens the lock. It is built from just a few simple shapes: two hearts, an arch, a keyhole, a small circle and a long thin key with square teeth.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch these 2 ovals. They only show where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase them at the end.
Step 2: The heart lock
Start on the left side of the page. Draw a big heart with two round bumps at the top and a dip in the middle, then curve the sides down to a point at the bottom.
Step 3: The curved shackle
Draw an upside-down U on top of the heart, like a rainbow arch. Its two straight legs should start at the top of the heart, one on each bump.
Step 4: Eyes and keyhole
Add two round dots for eyes in the middle of the heart. Below them, draw a keyhole: a small round top that gets wider toward a flat bottom.
Step 5: The key's heart top
On the right side, draw a smaller heart that tilts a little to the side. Let its bottom point aim down toward the lower left.
Step 6: The key shaft
From the point of the small heart, draw two long lines that slant down side by side. Close the bottom with a short line, then add little square teeth on one side.
Step 7: The key's round hole
Draw a small circle in the middle of the key's heart to make a round hole.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a heart lock and key
- Make the lock heart much bigger than the key heart so the two do not look the same size.
- Draw the arch so its legs land on the two round bumps of the heart, not in the dip in the middle.
- For the key teeth, draw them as little squares that stick out on one side, and keep them all about the same size.

Heart lock and key fun fact for kids
Long ago, people in ancient Egypt made some of the first wooden locks, and their keys were big and looked a bit like toothbrushes.
