How to Draw a Ghost: easy drawing guide for kids

How to Draw a Ghost (Easy Step by Step)

A ghost is one of the friendliest things to draw, because it is mostly one big, soft shape with a happy face. You will build it from a dome for the head, two little arms, and a wavy edge along the bottom. There are no hard corners, so wobbly lines look right.

How to Draw a Ghost · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: The dome head

Start low on the left and draw a big upside-down U that curves up and over like a dome. Stop low on the right, and leave the bottom open for now.

  2. Step 2: The left arm

At the left end of the dome, draw a small rounded loop that sticks out to the side. Start on the dome line, curve out and around, then sweep down to a soft point.

  3. Step 3: The right arm

Do the same on the right side. Start at the right end of the dome, curve out and up in a little loop, then sweep down to a soft point.

  4. Step 4: The right side

Under the right arm, draw a long curve that swoops down and out to the right. Finish it with a small hook at the end, like a curled tail.

  5. Step 5: The wavy bottom

Start under the left arm and draw a line down the left side. Then wiggle along the bottom with soft bumps, like waves, until you meet the hook on the right.

  6. Step 6: The happy face

Draw two small oval eyes and color them in. Add a tiny curved eyebrow above each eye, then draw a smile shaped like a half moon below them.

  7. Step 7: The fold line

Near the bottom left, draw one short curved line inside the body. Start a little below the arm and run it down along the edge, like a fold in a soft sheet.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a ghost

  • Draw the dome first and make it taller than it is wide. That gives the ghost its sweet, rounded shape.
  • The wavy bottom is the trickiest part. Think of a few gentle hills and slide your pencil over them without stopping.
  • Keep the two eyes the same size and at about the same height, then put the smile below them, in the middle.

How to color your ghost drawing

Pale blue, light gray, or soft lavender all look great for a ghost, and a bright yellow moon behind it makes it pop. You could also give your ghost a tiny party hat or a pumpkin to carry.

Ghost fun fact for kids

The English word ghost comes from the Old English word gast, which meant spirit. It is related to the German word Geist, which means spirit too.

Questions about drawing a ghost

What shapes do I need to draw a ghost?

You need a big dome, or upside-down U, for the head, two small loops for the arms, and a wavy line for the bottom. Little ovals work for the eyes and a half moon for the smile.

How do I make my ghost look cuter?

Make the eyes small, round and dark, and keep the smile wide. Tiny eyebrows above the eyes give it a happy look.

How do I draw the wavy bottom of a ghost?

Draw it as a row of soft hills and valleys, like gentle ocean waves. Try not to lift your pencil, and keep the bumps different sizes so it looks like it is floating.
