Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: Sides of the head
Draw two curved lines like a pair of parentheses, one on the left and one on the right, with a wide gap between them. Leave the top and the bottom open for now.
Step 3: The bottom shell
Below the head, draw a wide bowl shape like a big smile. Its two top ends stick up on the outside of the head lines, a little lower than where the head lines stop.
Step 4: The shell cap
On top of the head, draw a rounded dome like a little hat. Let the two ends of the dome touch the tops of the head lines.
Step 5: Top zigzag crack
Draw a zigzag line of pointy mountains across the bottom of the cap, from the left head line to the right head line. This makes the cap look broken.
Step 6: Bottom zigzag crack
Draw another zigzag where the head meets the bowl, from the left side to the right side. Make the points go up and down like a row of little teeth.
Step 7: Two flapping wings
On each side, draw a leaf shape with a pointy tip that sticks up and out. Start each wing near the shell's zigzag edge, curve it up to the tip, then bring the line back down along the inside.
Step 8: Eyes and beak
Draw two small round dots for eyes, spaced apart in the middle of the face. Between and below them, draw a small rounded triangle for the beak.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a chick hatching from an egg
- Draw the head lines first and the shell cap after them. The ends of the dome should meet the tops of the head lines.
- For the zigzags, practice a row of little letter Vs and upside-down Vs on scrap paper first. Keep the points about the same size so the crack looks even.
- Draw the two wings at the same height on each side. Imagine a line down the middle of the page and make the right wing a mirror of the left.

Chick hatching from an egg fun fact for kids
Baby chicks have a tiny, hard bump on the tip of their beak called an egg tooth. They use it to tap and crack the shell from the inside, and it falls off soon after they hatch.
Questions about drawing a chick hatching from an egg
What shapes do I need to draw a chick in an egg?
You need two curved lines for the sides of the head, a dome for the top of the shell, and a bowl shape for the bottom. Add zigzag lines for the cracks, two leaf shapes for wings, two dots for eyes and a small triangle for the beak.
How do I make my chick look cuter?
Keep the eyes small and wide apart on the face, and keep the beak tiny. Round, plump shapes also help, so try drawing the head lines a little rounder than you think they need to be.
How do I draw the cracked eggshell?
Draw a zigzag line of pointy peaks and valleys across the shell. Try making the peaks the same height, and the shell will look like it has just cracked open.
