How to draw a blue whale step by step

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: Back and side outline

Start at the left of the guide oval and draw a wavy line over the top, like a gentle hill and valley, ending in a little hook on the right. Then draw a long curve down the right side, leaving a gap at the bottom.

  3. Step 3: The tail fluke

At the right end of the back line, draw the tail with two rounded lobes, like a bird shape or a heart on its side. Leave a small dip in the middle where the two lobes meet.

  4. Step 4: The throat line

Start at the left edge of the head and draw a long wavy line that curves down and to the right toward the bottom of the body. It shows where the head meets the belly.

  5. Step 5: The belly line

Along the bottom left, draw a smooth curved line that starts at the left side of the body and ends where the throat line reaches the bottom.

  6. Step 6: The front flipper

Draw a long, narrow leaf shape that points down and to the right. Start with a short slanted line near the belly and curve around to a rounded tip.

  7. Step 7: The small fin

Near the bottom left of the body, draw a small rounded triangle that hangs down like a little fin.

  8. Step 8: The eye

On the head, just to the right of the curvy throat line, draw a small round dot for the eye. Color it in nice and dark.

  9. Step 9: The water spout

On top of the head, draw two curved lines that start close together and spread apart as they rise. Finish with a puffy cloud shape on top, with a bumpy top edge.

  10. Step 10: Splash lines

Inside the cloud of water, draw two short slanted lines. They look like little sparkles of spray.

  11. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a blue whale

  • Draw the guide oval very lightly first so you can fix the curve of the back before you press harder.
  • The tail is the trickiest part. Think of a bird shape with a small dip in the middle, and keep both sides about the same size.
  • Make the water spout last, and start both lines close together on the head so they spread apart as they go up.

What shapes do I need to draw a blue whale?

You start with a light oval as a guide for the body. Then you draw a wavy back line, a tail shaped like a bird, a leaf shape for the front flipper, a small rounded triangle for the fin, and a bumpy cloud for the water spout. A small dot makes the eye.

Place the eye a little to the right of the curvy throat line, and keep your lines smooth and rounded. Round, soft shapes always look friendlier than pointy ones.
