A macaw is a fun bird to draw because it is made from big, friendly shapes: a round head, a curved beak, a leaf-shaped wing, and a long skinny tail. Sitting on a branch gives it a calm pose. Once you have the shapes, the bright colors do the rest.

How to draw a blue and yellow macaw step by step

How to Draw a Blue and Yellow Macaw · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Head and back

Start at the front of the head and draw a curved line up and over the top. Then sweep it down the back in a long smooth curve that ends in a small hook near the bottom.

  2. Step 2: Beak and eye

At the front of the head, draw a big hooked beak that points down to a little tip, and fill it in solid. Then draw a tiny circle for the eye behind the top of the beak.

  3. Step 3: Chest line

Start just under the beak and draw a long curved line that goes down and bends a little to the right. This makes the front of the chest.

  4. Step 4: The wing

Start in the middle of the body and draw a curved line that bows out to the left and sweeps down and back. Let it end in a point near the end of the back line, making a leaf shape for the wing.

  5. Step 5: Cheek line

Under the eye, draw a short curved line that hooks around and ends near the beak. This makes the cheek.

  6. Step 6: The long tail

Below the wing, draw a long, narrow tail that points down and to the right. Draw one side, then the other, and join them at a rounded tip.

  7. Step 7: Feet and toes

Draw two chunky bumpy feet side by side near the bottom of the body, with a little curved line along the right side of them. Add a few tiny tick marks on the tail for feathers.

  8. Step 8: The branch

Draw two long, slightly wavy lines going out to the left from the feet to make the branch the bird sits on.

  9. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a blue and yellow macaw

  • The beak is the trickiest part. Draw the hooked shape first, then fill it in solid so it stands out.
  • Keep the wing line as one smooth curve. Try drawing it in the air a few times before you put the pencil down.
  • Draw the tail long and thin. Leave room at the bottom of the page so it does not get squished.
