How to Draw Bamboo (Easy Step by Step)
Bamboo is fun to draw because it is made of very simple pieces: tall tubes, little curved lines, and pointy leaves. You will draw three stalks of different heights, which makes the picture look like a real bamboo grove. If you can draw a long rectangle and a lemon shape, you can draw this.

Step 1: The tall middle stalk
Draw two long straight lines side by side, standing up from the bottom of the page. Close the top with a gently rounded cap, like the top of a tall tube.
Step 2: The two short stalks
Draw a shorter stalk on the left and another on the right, each with two straight lines and a rounded cap. Make the left one shorter than the right one, and both shorter than the middle one.
Step 3: Joints on the tall stalk
Draw a small, slightly curved line across the middle stalk, from one side to the other. Add more of these curves down the stalk with space between them.
Step 4: Joints on the short stalks
Add the same small curved lines across the left and right stalks, spread down each one. On the left stalk, let the top line stick out a little past the right side.
Step 5: Leaves on the tall stalk
Draw a pointy leaf shape like a long lemon on each side near the top, with the wide end touching the stalk. Add one more leaf on the right side, lower down.
Step 6: Leaves on the right stalk
Draw two leaves on the left of the right stalk and two smaller ones on its right side. Start each leaf at the stalk and curve out to a point.
Step 7: Leaves on the left stalk
Finish with leaves on the left stalk: two leaves pointing right near the top, a smaller one low on the right, and one hanging out on the left side. Each is a curved shape with a pointy tip.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing bamboo
- Draw the two sides of each stalk first, then check that they stay about the same distance apart all the way down.
- Make the joints as small curved lines that look alike on every stalk, so they look like they belong together.
- For each leaf, draw a light curved line for the top edge, then a second curve underneath that meets it at a point.

How to color your bamboo drawing
Try fresh greens for the stalks, a lighter green for the leaves, and a little yellow on the joints. For a creative twist, color the leaves in autumn orange and red, or add a sleepy panda behind the stalks.
Bamboo fun fact for kids
Some kinds of bamboo can grow almost a yard in a single day, which makes bamboo one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Giant pandas love to eat it.
Questions about drawing bamboo
What shapes do I need to draw bamboo?
You need long straight tubes for the stalks, small curved lines for the joints, and pointed oval shapes, like lemons, for the leaves.
How do I make my bamboo look more real?
Make the stalks different heights and spread the leaves out on both sides. Joints that are spaced a little differently on each stalk also help.
Why does bamboo have lines across it?
Those lines are called nodes. They are the joints where the stalk grows in sections, and leaves often sprout from them.
