How to Draw a Tomato · tinyhandscreate.com

  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The round body

Draw a big, wide curve shaped like a round bowl, a little squished on the sides. Start near the top on the left, curve down and around the bottom, and stop near the top on the right, leaving a gap at the top.

  3. Step 3: The leaf cap base

Across the gap at the top, draw a wavy line that dips down into a pointy V in the middle. Connect it to both ends of your round body so it closes the top.

  4. Step 4: The leafy crown

Above the wavy line, draw a crown of leaves with a small dip in the middle and a pointy tip on each side of the dip. Add a little flap at each end, and connect the crown to the ends of the wavy line below.

  5. Step 5: The little stem

Start at the dip in the middle of the leaves and draw a short line going up. Give it a gentle bend, like a tiny curl.

  6. Step 6: The happy face

Draw two small filled dots for eyes in the middle of the tomato, with space between them. Then draw a small curved smile, like a bowl, under and between the eyes.

  7. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a tomato

  • Draw the body wider than it is tall. A slightly squished circle looks more like a real tomato than a perfect one.
  • The leaf crown is the trickiest part. Draw the wavy line first, then add the pointy leaves above it so everything lines up.
  • Keep the stem short and give it a gentle bend. If it is too long, it starts to look like a plant instead of a tomato.

Tomato fun fact for kids

Tomatoes are technically a fruit, because they grow from a flower and hold seeds inside. Tomato plants also grow in many colors, including red, yellow, orange and even purple.
