  1. Step 1: Guide shapes

Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.

  2. Step 2: The pot body

Start at the top left and draw a curved line down the side, around the bottom, and back up the right side. It looks like a round bowl that is open at the top.

  3. Step 3: Two little feet

At the bottom of the pot, draw two small curved feet that look like tiny half circles. Put one on the left and one on the right.

  4. Step 4: Rim and first coins

Across the open top of the pot, draw a long rounded band like a pill for the rim. Then draw the rounded tops of a few coins peeking up from behind the rim.

  5. Step 5: Top and side coins

Add one round coin at the very top of the pile. Then draw a round coin on the left and one on the right, resting on the rim.

  6. Step 6: The inner rainbow

Draw a tall arch around the pot, starting low on the left side. Curve it up and over the coins and bring it down on the right side.

  7. Step 7: The outer rainbow

Draw a bigger arch outside the first one, starting a little further out. Keep it the same distance away all the way around.

  8. Step 8: Little sparkles

In the sky, draw a small diamond shape on the left with a tiny dot in the middle. Then draw a smaller round sparkle with a dot inside on the right.

  9. All done!

Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a pot of gold

  • Draw the coins as plain circles. Let each one overlap the one behind it, and the pile will look full right away.
  • The rainbow arches are the trickiest part. Start both low on the ground and go slowly, so the two lines stay the same distance apart.
  • Draw the pot rim as a long rounded band, like a pill. Make its ends round so it looks like it wraps around the pot.

Pot of gold fun fact for kids

A rainbow is really a full circle of light, but from the ground the horizon cuts off the bottom half so we usually only see an arch. In Irish stories, a sneaky little leprechaun hides his gold at the end of the rainbow.
