Step 1: Outer curve
Start near the top left and draw a big curved line that swoops down the left side and across the bottom, like the edge of a banana. Stop at the lower right.
Step 2: Inner curve
Start a little below the top of the moon, near the middle, and draw a second curve that bows inward and slides down to meet the end of the first curve. Now your crescent shape is done.
Step 3: Sleepy hat
At the top of the moon, start on the left edge and draw a wavy line to the top of the inner curve, and keep going to the right to make a point. Then draw a big curved bump from the left edge up and over to that point, like a floppy hat tipped to the right.
Step 4: Hat pom-pom
At the pointy end of the hat, draw a small circle. It is a fluffy pom-pom.
Step 5: Sleeping face
On the moon's face, draw two little curves that bend downward like tiny smiles for the closed eyes. Then draw a smaller smile below and between them.
Step 6: The big star
Next to the moon, draw a small star with five points. Start at one point and zigzag around until you are back at the start.
Step 7: Two little stars
Add two smaller stars below the first one, one to the lower right and one a bit lower and closer to the moon. Make them different sizes so the sky feels full.
All done!
Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a moon
- Draw the crescent in two curves that meet at the bottom. Sketch lightly first so you can fix the ends.
- Start the hat right where the top of the moon begins, so it looks like it is really sitting on the moon's head.
- Stars are easiest if you make a light dot for each point first, then connect the dots. Small stars are fine, so keep them simple.

Moon fun fact for kids
The Moon is about one quarter as wide as Earth, and it takes about 27 days to travel once around our planet.
Questions about drawing a moon
What shapes do I need to draw a moon?
You need a crescent, which is two curved lines that meet at a point. Add a hat, a small circle for the pom-pom, and a few stars.
How do I draw a crescent moon that looks even?
Draw the big outside curve first, then draw the inside curve so it ends where the first curve ends. Lightly sketching a circle first can help you place both curves.
How do I make my moon look sleepy?
Draw the eyes as little curved lines instead of circles, and add a tiny smile below them. A nightcap with a fluffy pom-pom makes it even cozier.
