  1. Step 1: The waistband

Draw a long, wide rectangle near the top of your page, with slightly rounded corners. This is the band that goes around the waist.

  2. Step 2: The skirt sides

Start at each bottom corner of the waistband and draw a long line that slants outward, like the sides of a bell. Make both sides match.

  3. Step 3: The wavy hem

Connect the bottom ends of the two sides with a wavy line. Make it dip down in the middle, with a small wave near each end.

  4. Step 4: Top pleats

Under the waistband, draw two short, slightly curved lines that start at the band and stop partway down. Leave a gap between them.

  5. Step 5: Bottom pleats

Near the hem, draw two more lines that slant a little, one on the left and one on the right. Stop each one just above the wavy bottom.

  6. Step 6: Polka dots

Draw one round dot on the left side and one on the right side, up high beside the pleats. Fill each dot in so it looks solid.

  7. Step 7: Little hearts

Draw three small hearts: one in the middle near the top, one in the middle lower down, and one near each bottom corner. Make two little bumps on top and a point at the bottom, then fill them in.

  8. All done!

Go over your lines with a marker, then color it in.

Tips for drawing a skirt

  • Draw the two skirt sides one after the other and check that they slant out by about the same amount, so the skirt looks balanced.
  • The wavy hem is the trickiest part. Make it with slow, loose curves, and do not worry if the waves are not exactly even.
  • Draw hearts by making two little bumps and then joining them to a point. Try one on scrap paper first, then fill them in.

Questions about drawing a skirt

What shapes do I need to draw a skirt?

You need a long rectangle for the waistband and a bell shape with a wavy bottom for the skirt itself. Add four short lines for pleats, plus dots and hearts for decoration.

How do I make my skirt look like it is flowing?

Make the sides slant outward and give the hem gentle waves. Pleat lines that start at the waistband and stop partway down also help it look like it swishes.

How can I decorate my skirt drawing?

Add polka dots and small hearts. Spread them out so there is room between each one, and fill them in with a bold color.
