How to Draw an Umbrella (Easy Step by Step)
An umbrella is a cheerful drawing because it is built from just a few easy shapes: a big dome, straight lines, and little scoops along the bottom. Add a hooked handle and some raindrops, and you have a rainy day picture ready to color. It is a great first drawing for beginners.

Step 1: Guide shapes
Lightly sketch this oval. It only shows where the big parts go, so press softly. You will erase it at the end.
Step 2: The dome
Draw a big wide dome, like a rainbow or a bowl turned upside down. Start low on the left, curve up over the top, and come down on the right, then curl each end inward into a tiny hook.
Step 3: The top tip
At the very top of the dome, draw a small pointed cone, like a tiny party hat. Add a short straight stick poking up from its tip.
Step 4: The middle rib
Draw one straight line from the little cone down the middle of the dome. Stop near the bottom edge of the umbrella.
Step 5: The side ribs
Draw four curved lines that start at the cone and fan out toward the bottom edge, two on the left and two on the right. Space them out like the slices of a pie.
Step 6: The scalloped edge
Along the bottom of the dome, draw a row of small smiley curves, one under each slice of the umbrella. Each curve starts and ends where a rib meets the edge.
Step 7: The handle
Under the middle of the umbrella, draw a long straight line going down. At the bottom, curve it around into a hook, like the letter J.
Step 8: The raindrops
Draw five small raindrops around the umbrella. Each one has a pointed top and a round bottom. Add a tiny oval inside each drop to make it shine.
All done!
Erase the guide shapes, go over your lines, then color it in.

Tips for drawing an umbrella
- Make the dome nice and wide. The ribs and the scalloped edge are much easier to place on a big, even dome.
- Make the ribs meet at one point at the top. Imagine the center of a clock face and aim every line there.
- Draw the scallops one small smile at a time, and try to keep them about the same size so the edge looks tidy.

How to color your umbrella drawing
Try a rainbow umbrella with a different color for each slice, and a blue or gray rainy sky behind it. Color the raindrops in different shades of blue.
Umbrella fun fact for kids
Umbrellas were used for shade long before they were used for rain. People in ancient Egypt, China, and Greece held them up to stay out of the hot sun.
